Trauma recovery advocate and NHS professional
I've been practicing yoga for over eight years. I first discovered it as a psychology student travelling to India to learn how they treat mental illness.
This led me to take yoga classes at my university when I returned to London. It was all new and the practice felt unfamiliar but I left some of the sessions feeling more aware of my body and own feelings.
Yoga became a crucial practice to support my mental health, it created a space to be able to make choices, and process my experiences.
In 2024, I decided to train as a yoga facilitator in India and then undertake the Trauma Sensitive Yoga course at the Center for Trauma and Embodiment. I've felt the urge to share yoga with others for years but didn't feel ready to teach. I attended classes that didn't offer a supportive environment, they built competition, assumed abilities, and reinforced a hierarchy of what our we should be doing with our bodies.
This is not what I wanted to offer. I want to create an environment of safety that supports connection to ourselves and acceptance of our bodies led by trauma informed principles. And that's where I've landed today with @teviyoga, developing classes that share power and enable participants to make choices.
Tevi means 'Grow' in Cornish, representing the ability for yoga practices to support our growth in whichever direction we decide.Â
Alongside my yoga facilitation, I work in the NHS on projects that tackle inequality and improve services for patients. I am also a trustee at Brighton based social health charity Together Co.
